Screaming kids got you down? Does every situation end up in a fight? Do you find yourself threatening . . . “One more time and I will have to separate you two!” OR “That’s it, I’ve had it! Knock it off right now or I’ll . . .!” OR “Why can’t you two get along!!!? You are brother and sister! I just don’t understand why you are so MEAN to each other!”

Truth is, as parents we have A LOT to do with our kids fighting with each other. I think many parents suspect that they have SOMETHING to do with all the fighting, but they can’t figure out WHAT they are doing that keeps the fighting alive.

Here are a few questions to consider:

1. If you leave the room when the kids are fighting, do they follow you?
2. Do the kids tell on each other when the fight has ended?
3. Do the kids demand that you punish one or the other of them for causing the fight?
4. Do the kids yell loudly enough for you to hear?
5. And finally, if you offered them Ice Cream would they stop the fighting and yell HURRAY!
